This painting is part of a modern day florilegium. The word florilegium originates from the latin ‘gather’ and ‘flower’. At a time when photography was not yet invented, artists recorded newly discovered plants and flowers through paint.

Spring-flowering anemones, often known as windflowers, have ancient roots in Mediterranean regions and were cherished in Greek and Roman mythology as symbols of renewal and fleeting beauty. This is thought to be due to their presence as one of the first flowers to bloom in spring.
